Tips For Maintaining Body Shape During the Holidays

Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s… The holiday season is here, and with it comes plenty of opportunities to indulge when it comes to food and drink. Often we excuse ourselves to enjoy the festive spreads at parties, but for many of us it comes at the expense of gaining a few pounds (actually the average is 5-6) and losing our body shape.

Is there anything that can be done, or is this holiday bulge inevitable? Are there ways to maintain body shape without feeling left out of the celebrations? We think so. Here are some tips to help you make it through this holiday season full of joy and free of unwanted fat.

Get Moving: Take every chance you get to move your body and get exercise. For example, as you head out to do your holiday shopping, park far away from stores so it forces you to walk further. Going up the escalator? Don’t just stand there—walk up the moving stairs (you’ll get to your destination faster, anyways). If you have the choice between an elevator and stairs, opt for the stairs every time. Make a plan right now to look for opportunities for exercise in this busy season. Try to get in 10,000 steps a day, which is what experts say is needed to maintain weight. It sounds like a lot, but you can do it!

Party Smarter: It’s key to know how to handle holiday parties and get-togethers that promise to have an array of tempting dishes available. First, don’t starve yourself before the party, thinking you’re giving yourself “calorie credit” for later. Starving yourself is counterproductive because it almost always means you will binge at the party, forgetting all sense of moderation. On the contrary, it is wise to eat a healthy, satisfying meal before the party so your curb temptation once you get there.

Second, don’t be afraid to enjoy the food and drink available, but do so in small portions. Choose foods that you have to eat with utensils, avoiding small finger foods that can quickly sabotage your calorie intake. Go ahead and allow yourself to have a glass of wine or beer, but cut yourself off there and opt for sparkling water afterwards.
