Dr. Zimmet and Co-Authors Publish Core Content for Training in Venous and Lymphatic Medicine

Phlebology: The Journal of Venous DiseaseDr. Steven E. Zimmet is the lead author of “Core Content for Training in Venous and Lymphatic Medicine,” which has been accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed and indexed journal, Phlebology: The Journal of Venous Disease. The co-authors, very prominent physicians who are recognized experts in the field, are Drs. Teresa Carman (Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine), Anthony Comerota (Jobst Vascular Institute), Craig Feied (Georgetown University School of Medicine), Michael Jaff (Massachusetts General Hospital), Mark Meissner (University of Washington School of Medicine), Robert Min (Weill Cornell Medical College), Suman Rathbun (University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center), and Thomas Wakefield (University of Michigan Health System).

The work has received endorsements from both the American College of Phlebology and the American Venous Forum, two of the largest and most influential medical societies devoted to vein and lymphatic diseases in the world.

The major vein societies in the world share a common mission to improve the standards of medical practitioners, the educational standards for teaching and training programs in venous medicine, and the quality of patient care related to the treatment of venous disorders. With these goals in mind, the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine (ABVLM) convened a multi-specialty task force with representatives from dermatology, interventional radiology, phlebology, vascular medicine and vascular surgery, with the objectives to agree upon the core content in venous and lymphatic medicine. Dr. Zimmet, President of the ABVLM, chaired this task force.

The Core Content covers the areas of knowledge that are essential to practice in the field of venous and lymphatic medicine. It can also serve as a template for the development of curricula for medical school, residency and fellowship education, and serve as a framework for training programs, accreditation standards, and board certification testing.

The Core Content is divided into five key categories:

  • Basic sciences
  • Diagnostic evaluation
  • Treatment modalities in venous and lymphatic medicine
  • Clinical sciences
  • Other components and core competencies of the practice of venous and lymphatic medicine

Dr. Zimmet and co-authors, along with a larger group of advisors, developed the work using in-depth reviews of the latest available medical literature combined with their own expertise and experience in their areas of specialty.

The complete Core Content manuscript can be found here:
