Laser and Intense Pulse Light (IPL) based hair removal and skin care technologies have been around for more than two decades. Permanent hair reduction, if not permanent hair removal, can be achieved with these advanced, non-surgical techniques. Multiple treatment sessions are usually required to achieve optimal results.
Dr. Steven Zimmet is an experienced dermatologist providing laser and IPL hair removal treatments. Dr. Zimmet’s practice is equipped with state of the art light-based technologies to address various medical and cosmetic dermatology conditions. Dr. Zimmet provides these procedures to patients in Austin, TX and surrounding locations.
How does it Work?
High-energy laser beams in varying strengths are designed to precisely target the pigment contained in the hair shaft as well as the hair follicle or root that needs to be removed. The laser energy heats up the hair follicle from its base, causing damage to the cells that generate hair growth. When sufficient controlled damage is created through laser, it can prevent the hair from growing any further.
The effect of this unique laser dermatology hair removal procedure is most productive during the anagen or the active phase of hair growth. New hairs begin to grow in this phase. During this period, the pigmentation of the hair follicle increases, and growth of new cells occurs. This makes it more open to impact from the laser heat treatment.
While laser delivers a single wavelength, an IPL system can deliver hundreds of wavelengths in a single burst of light. Specific filters are used to target these flashes of light in order to ensure that they work in a precise and controlled manner like a laser beam. This controlled burst of light is used to cause damage to the hair follicle in much the same way as a laser beam.
Procedure
The treatment provider will use a small hand piece to deliver flashes or beams of light to the targeted area of the skin. Some laser techniques may also involve spraying the skin with a cooling agent prior to the procedure. Alternatively, a cooling gel may be applied to the treated area.
Minimal discomfort is involved in the laser or IPL hair removal procedures. Most patients report a stinging or tingling sensation during the procedure, but the discomfort can vary depending on the technology used and the patient’s personal pain tolerance level.
If the treatment is received in a sensitive area, the provider may apply a topical anesthetic to keep the patient comfortable. Leading dermatologist Dr. Zimmet receives patients from Austin, TX and nearby areas for laser and IPL hair removal.
Repeat Treatments
Hair removal procedure typically involves multiple treatments because of the natural hair growth cycle. Each hair follicle goes through the phases of growing and resting. The follicles are treated most effectively during the early growth phase with light based procedures.
The first treatment will only damage a limited number of the follicles. In a few weeks, the previously resting hair follicles will start growing, which will need to be targeted in the next treatment session.
