Duplex ultrasound is a diagnostic technique which enables imaging of underlying veins as well as functional assessment of how the veins are working. It is particularly useful when evaluating someone with varicose veins, leg ulcers, or possible blood clots. Ultrasound duplex scanning provides information which helps in treatment decisions, and it is used to perform some vein treatments such as endovenous laser and ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy.
WHAT IS A DUPLEX ULTRASOUND EVALUATION?
Duplex ultrasound is a painless test which uses both traditional ultrasound (high frequency sound waves) and Doppler ultrasonography. The traditional ultrasound sends sound waves into the blood vessels, transmitting a black-and-white image showing the structure of your vessels. The Doppler ultrasound provides an audible signal of the movement of blood. This can be color coded to visually show the blood flow.
WHAT DOES THE DUPLEX ULTRASOUND PROCEDURE INVOLVE?
Generally, no preparation is necessary before the treatment. Ultrasound gel, which facilitates the travel of sound waves, is applied to the area to be studied. A wand or “transducer” is moved over the area. The ultrasound examination is best done with the patient standing when used to evaluate varicose veins.
WHAT ARE SOME EARLY SYMPTOMS FOR VENOUS DISEASE?
Many patients are unaware of their vein disorder and may even be asymptomatic. Dr. Zimmet explains how venous disease can impact patients in the early stages in the following video.
