I've been going to Dr. Zimmet for more than 10 years. I have tried other dermatologists in Austin, but none have Dr. Zimmet's expertise as a phlebologist, nor have I found any other doctors that match Dr. Zimmet's professionalism and patient care."

What's the difference between spider, reticular, and varicose veins?Spider veins are small red or blue veins on the surface of the skin. Reticular veins are slightly deeper and 1-3 mm in diameter. Reticular veins often "feed" spider veins. Varicose veins are even larger, actually protruding from the skin's surface.
What are the risks of spider and varicose veins? When left unattended, spider and varicose veins can cause leg heaviness, leg fatigue, pain, cramping, itching and restless legs. Varicose veins can lead to leg swelling, inflammation, dermatitis, phlebitis, and leg ulcers.
My legs hurt, but I can hardly see any visible veins. Do I have a vein disorder? It's possible. Make an appointment with Zimmet Vein & Dermatology for a consultation and possible duplex ultrasound examination; this device uses ultrasound to evaluate veins below the skin.
When should I come in for a consultation about my leg veins?Evaluation and treatment can be considered if you don't like the appearance of your veins, if they are causing symptoms, or if you're concerned and want more information.
Which treatments are best for which veins?Spider veins are usually most effectively treated with sclerotherapy. Varicose vein treatments include sclerotherapy, ambulatory phlebectomy, and endovenous laser treatment. Often, the most effective choice is a combination of two or more of the above treatment options, but the treatments recommended will be based on your particular vein condition. Schedule a vein consultation with Dr. Zimmet to create a customized vein treatment plan.
How experienced is Dr. Zimmet?Dr. Zimmet has had a serious interest in vein problems since 1987. He has performed about 25,000 vein treatments, and is Past President of the largest vein specialty society in the world. See his full CV for more details.
What medications are used for sclerotherapy? We use both liquid and foam sclerotherapy, depending on the veins being treated. The sclerosants include Asclera, Sotradecol, dextrose/saline and rarely hypertonic saline.
When is an ultrasound needed? All patients with varicose veins and selected patients with spider veins need ultrasound evaluation before treatment.
Who does the ultrasound test?Dr. Zimmet holds a Registered Vascular Technologist certification. He does the ultrasound testing himself.
