Dermatologist | Dermatology | Austin, TX | Skin CancerThe American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) has recently released findings from a new national survey, which reveal that nine in 10 American men are aware of the existence of skin cancer, but only about 18 percent of American men actually visit a doctor for annual skin cancer screenings. This apathy towards the risk of skin cancer appears to be more conspicuous in younger men in the age group of 18 to 34.

The reality is that one in five people in the US will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. The deadliest form of skin cancer, melanoma, will afflict one in 50 Americans by 2015. The incidence of melanoma has been on the rise over the last three decades. Men are at a higher risk of this disease compared to women. The heartening part in the AAD survey is that men across age groups are more receptive to learning about skin cancer.

To spread greater knowledge and discussion about skin cancer among men, AAD has teamed up with the legendary New York Giants quarterback and CBS Sports analyst Phil Simms. Together they are launching SPOT me, an awareness campaign to highlight the risks of skin cancer. The campaign will particularly encourage men in all age groups to set up periodic skin cancer screenings from a board certified dermatologist and make skin health a priority.

Simms was diagnosed with skin cancer on his face, head, and ears in 2010 when he visited a dermatologist for a check-up. He has since undergone treatment and modified his lifestyle to reduce the risk of recurrence of skin cancer. Simms said: “Like most men, I resisted going to the doctor until my daughter encouraged me to have my skin checked, and I was lucky my skin cancer was diagnosed early and effectively treated.”

Simms is keen to educate men about the dangers of skin cancer in the United States. He says: “I get regular screenings and make sure my family – especially my two sons – does the same. I want to encourage men of all ages to talk to their family members and friends, be proactive with their skin health and most importantly, get screened for skin cancer.” Apart from teaming up with Simms, the Academy has also entered into a partnership with three professional football teams to raise awareness about skin cancer and provide free skin cancer screenings.

The president of the AAD, Dr. Brett Coldiron, also pointed out to the growing incidence of skin cancer among men. He said: “In my recent experience, I have treated more men than women for skin cancer, and the skin cancers in men are often more serious. This may be because men don’t get screened as often as they should, which leads to more advanced cancers that could have been caught earlier. The survey findings are encouraging in that men do wish to learn more and even welcome discussion about skin cancer.” The Academy’s skin cancer awareness campaign, SPOT me, is a part of its larger SPOT Skin Cancer initiative.

Dermatologist | Skin Care | Austin | TXEndyMed’s innovative 3DEEP radio frequency based technology is a state of the art treatment for skin tightening, body contouring, and acne scar reduction. This non-surgical technology for fractional and non-ablative wrinkle treatment tightens the skin on both the face and the body. Dr. Steven E. Zimmet provides this safe, proven and effective anti-aging aesthetic treatment to his patients in Austin, TX and surrounding areas.

New Clinical Study

A new clinical study conducted in Japan, and published in the official journal of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, has confirmed the effectiveness of 3DEEP radio frequency technology in skin tightening and enhancing elastin density. The study, conducted by the the Clinica Tanaka Plastic, Reconstructive Surgery and Anti-Aging Center in Matsumoto, Japan, was designed to assess the effectiveness of EndyMed PRO multi-source phase controlled RF device on skin rejuvenation and tightening in Asian-type skin.

The research team, led by Dr. Yohei Tanaka, involved in this study applied cutting edge 3D imaging and histology to quantify the improvement in skin tightening, cheek lifting, and the improvements in elastin fiber quantity in the skin. As an experienced dermatologist offering 3DEEP RF technology to his patients in Austin, TX and other areas, Dr. Zimmet closely followed the results of this study to ensure the best interests of the patients.

How the Study was Conducted

The study was performed on 10 Japanese patients, including nine women and one man, in the age group of 26 to 51 years. The RF device employed in the study was EndyMed PRO, which is an FDA cleared system for non-ablative skin tightening of the face and body, fractional skin resurfacing, and micro-needle RF skin remodeling. Following the treatment of these 10 patients with this technology, the research team performed 3D imaging to evaluate the post-treatment improvements.

Significant improvement was noticed in terms of skin tightening and lifting. The treated area improved markedly in comparison to the untreated area. 80 percent of the patients experienced significant improvement, while the remaining 20 percent experienced moderate improvement. The treatment was performed without anesthesia or contact cooling, but most of the patients did not report any pain. No side effects were reported, and the patients remained comfortable throughout the treatment.

Conclusion of the Study

Dr. Tanaka and his team concluded that the EndyMed 3DEEP RF treatments can help promote new elastin production in a safe and effective manner and achieve skin rejuvenation by reducing skin laxity and wrinkles. Elastin is among the key proteins of connective tissue that plays a critical role in providing elasticity to the skin. Due to aging and other factors, the skin experiences loss of elastin fibers.

The results of this study have shown an increase in the quantity of elastin fibers produced in the skin following the 3DEEP RF treatment. Apart from showing substantive reduction in wrinkles and skin laxity, the study also demonstrated that the treatment using EndyMed PRO 3DEEP RF device was fairly comfortable for the patient and revealed no accompanying side effects. 3DEEP is the first FDA cleared RF technology that employs multi-phase controlled RF generators to achieve optimal outcomes in a painless manner.
