Preference Grows for Minimally Invasive Aesthetic Procedures: ASPS Report
Medical advancements in the area of cosmetic surgery and dermatology have led to an increasing number of men and women in the US seeking these procedures. Particularly, the growth in non-surgical med spa procedures has been remarkable in recent years with the introduction of innovative technologies and techniques.
The latest data report tracking the trends in demand for non-surgical aesthetic skin related procedures has been released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). It shows that a significant rise has been registered in almost all non-invasive and minimally invasive aesthetic dermatology procedures over the last 15 years. Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox or Dysport)
The ASPS report for 2014 reveals that nearly 6.7 million Botulinum Toxin Type A-based injectable treatments were performed in the US alone. This makes Botox and Dysport as the most popular non-surgical anti-aging skin solutions. The growth in these procedures has been eight-fold since 2000.
Among non-surgical skin care aesthetic procedures, cellulite reduction showed a growth of 22% from 2000 to 2014, with 29,243 treatments carried out in 2014.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
IPL technology based treatments are designed to promote skin renewal and tighten and firm up the saggy areas of the skin. Nearly 622,000 procedures were performed in 2014, showing a growth of 3% over 2013.
Laser Hair Removal
The growth in the popularity of this procedure has been consistent in recent years, with a jump of 51% since 2000. More than 1.1 million laser hair removal procedures were carried out in 2014.
Laser Skin Resurfacing
Ablative and non-ablative treatments involving laser technology stood at 543,731 procedures in 2014. The overall rise in the number of procedures from 2000 to 2014 has been 218%.
Laser Vein Treatment
The total number of laser vein treatments performed in 2014 was 207,790, which was almost the same number as in 2013.
Microdermabrasion has ranked among the top five in-demand non-surgical aesthetic procedures in the country in 2014. Almost 882,000 procedures were performed in 2014, but this was a reduction of 9% in comparison to 2013.
Sclerotherapy has continued to be a widely accepted injectable treatment for vein removal. A total of 323,609 treatments were carried out in 2014, representing a small improvement over 2013.
Dermal filler treatments led in popularity in the minimally invasive aesthetic segment, with over 2.3 million procedures carried out in 2014. The growth in this procedure has been as much as 253% since 2000. Juvederm and Restylane, which are hyaluronic acid based fillers, have grown by 8% year on year in 2014.
A total of 14 million cosmetic minimally invasive treatments were performed in the US in 2014, showing an increase of 154% since the year 2000.
