FAQ – Vein Services

WHAT IS PHLEBOLOGY?

Phlebology is the medical term for the evaluation and treatment of venous diseases just like dermatology is the evaluation and treatment of skin disorders.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SPIDER VEIN AND A VARICOSE VEIN?

Spider veins are small, dilated veins near the surface of the skin. A varicose vein is a larger, bulging vein.

WHAT CAUSES VARICOSE VEINS?

The most common predisposing factors in the development of varicose veins are heredity, pregnancy, and hormones. Minor factors include prolonged standing, leg injury, sedentary lifestyle, obesity and hot weather.

WHY DO I NEED AN INITIAL CONSULTATION?

During your first visit, Dr. Zimmet will assess your medical history and examine your veins. This is all that is required in most patients with spider veins. Dr. Zimmet will recommend what treatment would be most appropriate for you.

For patients with varicose veins — and in some with spider veins — a painless ultrasound evaluation is done to determine if there in an underlying vein in your leg that is causing what is visible on the surface. After this evaluation, Dr. Zimmet will be able to discuss the treatment options appropriate for your condition.

WILL I NEED TO HAVE VEIN STRIPPING?

There are alternative treatments to stripping that have comparable or better results and can be provided in-office without general anesthesia or incisions. Vein stripping can be avoided in just about all patients, even those with advanced cases of varicose veins as Dr. Zimmet explains in this video.

WHAT SHOULD I CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING WHO WILL TREAT MY VEINS?

No matter whom you choose to see, we highly recommend that you ask about their experience and training in treating vein problems. For example, many vascular or general surgeons have had years of “vascular” experience, but this is often in treating arterial issues — not vein problems. One has little to do with the other.

Dr. Zimmet has treated thousands of patients for vein issues over the last 20 years. He is a leading and internationally recognized authority in the treatment of spider and varicose veins. For more details, please review Dr. Zimmet’s background.

HOW EFFECTIVE ARE THE TREATMENTS? ARE THEY PERMANENT?

Vein treatments work very well in most patients. However, no available treatment for spider and varicose veins is successful 100% of the time. Treatment does not change the genetic makeup of your veins and your predisposition to forming these kinds of veins. Periodic maintenance treatments may be necessary to keep your legs in the best condition.

ISN’T LASER TREATMENT BETTER THAN SCLEROTHERAPY FOR SPIDER VEINS?

Dr. Zimmet believes that laser treatment is a good choice for facial vein treatment. However, laser treatment for leg veins is usually more expensive, more painful and less effective than well-executed sclerotherapy for leg veins.

MY HAND VEINS ARE VERY PROMINENT. CAN ANYTHING BE DONE?

Treatment for hand veins is available. Dr. Zimmet most often recommends sclerotherapy; however a specific recommendation can only be made after consultation.
