The laser device will release powerful pulses of light, which will be focused on the tattooed area to eliminate the permanent tattoo ink. These are extremely short bursts of laser energy, which are targeted over the affected skin in a controlled manner. Many patients describe the pain experience as similar to the skin being snapped by a thin rubber band, or getting hot specks of bacon grease on the skin.

Removing black ink based tattoos will be relatively painless because the black pigment will absorb all laser wavelengths. Other colors, such as green, absorb laser beams selectively and may require different lasers with higher intensity treatment.  Removing older tattoos or tattoos made with rare types of inks may take a little longer.

Multiple Treatment Sessions

To make the entire treatment experience more effective and relatively pain-free, the laser tattoo removal expert may plan multiple treatment sessions. Each treatment session will usually last for less than 30 minutes, depending on the size and number of tattoos. The number of sessions will be determined by the type and amount of ink used and how deeply it was originally injected.

The dermatologist may keep a gap of three weeks between two treatment sessions to allow the pigment residue to be absorbed by the body. An anti-bacterial ointment may be prescribed for application after the treatment to minimize the risk of infection and provide soothing post-treatment comfort.

Redness may remain in the treated area for a few weeks, and the skin may feel a little sunburned for a couple of days. Dr. Zimmet receives patients from Austin, TX and nearby areas for laser tattoo removal and other procedures.
