Austin Microdermabrasion
Is your skin not absorbing your favorite moisturizer brand like it used to? Is your foundation exaggerating the appearance of facial wrinkles and fine lines? As you age, your skin builds up layers of dead cells, leading to uneven skin texture and a dull complexion. Microdermabrasion is an exfoliation treatment that removes the top cell layer of skin to reveal more radiant, softer, younger- looking skin.
Treatment is affordable and convenient, with no downtime and minimal recovery.
Microdermabrasion Benefits
After the first few treatments, patients usually notice:
- Minimized appearance of enlarged pores, mild acne scars, blackheads and fine lines
- Even skin tone and smooth skin texture
- Improved sun damaged skin
Treatment Time
One microdermabrasion treatment takes about 30 to 40 minutes. For optimal results, a series of at least 5 treatments is recommended. Each treatment is scheduled about seven to ten days apart.
How It Works
A tiny vacuum sprays microscopic crystals across the skin’s surface to gently remove the older, outer layer of skin. During microdermabrasion, most patients report minimal discomfort. Complications and treatment side effects (infection, scarring, etc.) are rare.
Before/After Treatment Tips
Prior to getting microdermabrasion, patients are encouraged to follow a good skin care routine and apply sunscreen daily.
Our skin care professionals will apply a special lotion to your face after treatment and recommend a suitable moisturizer for everyday use. You can apply make-up immediately after the procedure. However, expect the skin to appear flushed for up to 48 hours after treatment. It is important to continue to apply sunscreen daily as skin is more fragile and prone to sunburn.
For two days following each treatment, we advise patients to avoid products with ingredients known to irritate skin (e.g., Retin-A, retinol or alpha hydroxyacid). To further reduce the chance of skin irritation, the use of facial brushes or sponges should also be avoided.
Do-It-Yourself Home Kits vs. Professional Microdermabrasion
While microdermabrasion home kits are cheaper than going to a professional dermatology office, results often disappoint. Also, microdermabrasion may not be the right choice for your skin type or skin issues. We recommend evaluation by an experienced procedural dermatologist who can evaluate whether microdermabrasion is right for you. Dr. Zimmet may recommend an alternative skin rejuvenation method that is better suited to your skin type.
