There are many types of pigmentation disorders, including age spots, birthmarks, vitiligo and melasma. Of course, moles are usually pigmented, as are cancerous moles, known as malignant melanoma. So, please have your dermatologist check you if you have a pigmented or other lesion that is changing, has any of the warning signs of melanoma, or just looks or feels different from other spots on your skin.
AGE SPOTS
Age spots, also called liver spots or solar lentigines, are flat, pigmented spots which occur primarily in sun-exposed areas. True age spots are harmless. Treatment for age spots include bleaching creams and other topical agents, cryosurgery (freezing), peels, and laser/light treatments.
The exposure to sunlight plays a significant role in hyperpigmentation. Sunscreen is the initial line of defense to prevent discoloration. Ideal sunscreens protect against harmful UVA and UVB rays.
There are a number of treatment options to rejuvenate discolored and sun-damaged skin. Our dedicated staff at Zimmet Vein & Dermatology in Austin, TX looks forward to discussing your options with you.
