There are three main types of superficial legs veins- spider veins, reticular veins and varicose veins. The main difference between these are size and depth of vein. Spider veins are small and very superficial, reticular veins somewhat larger (1-3 mm) and deeper, and varicose veins larger (> 3mm) and deeper still.
Spider and Reticular Veins
Spider and reticular veins are most often effectively treated with sclerotherapy. Certain lasers can be used, primarily if sclerotherapy is ineffective.
Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are often associated with a dysfunctional vein below the skin that may be feeding into and causing the surface varicose vein. Because of this, we always perform a duplex ultrasound evaluation before treatment. Once a history and physical is done, along with the duplex evaluation, a treatment plan tailored to your particular condition can be developed. Possible treatments include sclerotherapy, ambulatory phlebectomy, compression stockings, and endovenous laser treatment of underlying dysfunctional veins.
