Austin Acne Scar Solutions
Acne is the most common skin condition in the US. While acne often clears by the 20s, about 1 in 5 people, mostly women, continue to be effected into adulthood. Whether you’re a teenager or an adult, acne can cause acne scars, discomfort, embarrassment and depression.
WHAT CAUSES ACNE SCARS?
Scars result when the skin repairs wounds caused by accident, diseases, or surgery. Acne, particularly the cystic or nodular type, is a common cause of scars. Scars may be red, white, indented or raised.
PREVENTING ACNE SCARS
“Popping” pimples increases the likelihood of scarring, as it pushes the infection deeper into the skin. So, please avoid this no matter how tempting it is. Treatment often effectively reduces acne, and reduces the risk of scarring.
Although acne scarring may be inevitable in some cases, a number of treatments are available to diminish visible scars.
ACNE SCAR TREATMENT
The most effective laser for resurfacing of acne scars is the carbon dioxide (CO2) laser. Erbium and other lasers can also be used. Lasers work by removing the top layers of skin to a precise depth. Improvement in the scar is usually noted as the skin heals from the laser treatment.
A filler substance is injected beneath the surface of the skin where it temporarily plumps and smoothes the skin. Dr. Zimmet generally recommends the hyaluronic acid fillers, like RESTYLANE® and JUVEDERM™, for their combination of safety, smooth and natural appearance, and good duration. Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of human skin and is the framework in which skin cells live.
Microdermabrasion uses tiny abrasive crystals to comfortably and precisely sand away the top layer of skin. This procedure generally requires a minimum of 5 treatments, each separated by about a week. By periodically removing the skin’s surface, consisting of bacteria and dead skin cells, your skin rejuvenates. It tends to cause mild improvement, and can be used in people with mild acne scars.
OTHER TREATMENT
Pulsed light, surgery, and other treatments may be used to treat some scars.
