Austin Spider and Varicose Vein Treatments

More than 80 million Americans suffer from some form of venous disorder. Fortunately, major advances in diagnosis and treatment offer minimally invasive treatment even to most patients with advanced vein disorders.

SPIDER & VARICOSE VEINS

Spider veins are small dilated vessels that commonly occur on the legs and face, and can occur elsewhere.

Varicose veins are bulging veins that are deeper and larger -- typically 3mm or more in diameter -- than spider veins. They may be a primarily cosmetic concern, but can also cause pain, leg heaviness, fatigue, itching, night cramps, restless legs at night, and leg swelling. More advanced varicose veins can compromise the nutrition of the skin, increase the risk for phlebitis, and lead to eczema, inflammation or even ulceration of the lower leg.

DUPLEX ULTRASOUND EXAMINATION: Essential when determining treatment options for patients with varicose veins, this painless test enables us to hear and see how the blood is flowing in your veins, and to visualize your veins. We use it to assess the status of the deep veins and determine the origin of your varicose veins. This will dictate what kind of treatment options are appropriate to consider.

VEIN TREATMENTS

Dr. Zimmet uses a variety of state of the art techniques to treat vein disorders, individualized based on your specific condition.

SCLEROTHERAPY: Address problem veins through this non-surgical procedure that injects a solution into the varicose veins or spider veins to make them disappear.

LASER & PULSED LIGHT TREATMENT: Treat spider and varicose veins with this light-based procedure that heats the veins. A light beam is pulsed onto the veins in order to seal them off, causing them to dissolve.

AMBULATORY PHLEBECTOMY: Remove large varicose veins with this in-office procedure that utilizes tiny punctures or incisions, which are so small no stitches are required.

ENDOVENOUS LASER TREATMENT (EVLT): An alternative to vein stripping, EVLT is an in-office procedure that uses a very thin laser fiber to close the inside of the vein. It is done under local anesthesia without incisions.

WHAT IS PHLEBOLOGY?

Phlebology is the field of medicine that deals with vein disorders. The American Medical Association recognizes Phlebology as a distinct medical specialty, and the American College of Phlebology (ACP) is the largest medical organization in the U.S. specifically devoted to improving the treatment of vein disorders. Dr. Zimmet served as the immediate Past-President of the ACP.

QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD ASK YOUR DOCTOR

Always research your doctor before you commit to any vein treatment procedure:

  • How long has the doctor been performing the procedure in question?
  • How many procedures has this doctor performed? With what success rate?
  • Ask about her/his medical training, background and ongoing education.
