Aging is inevitable, as much as we all would like to avoid it, and the natural changes that occur in our bodies are also inevitable. The same goes for your skin; it changes greatly as the years go on. There’s plenty of precautionary steps you can take to prevent premature aging and other signs of aging skin, but eventually gravity and the natural processes take over and wrinkles begin to show. There are a few tell-tale signs of aging skin and ways to help your skin stay healthy and youthful as long as possible:

  1. Skin gets drier: Dry skin and excessive itching is common with age. As you age you lose oil glands, which naturally moisturize your skin. It’s important to keep moisturizing your skin with lotions as you age. Always apply a healthy amount of a good quality moisturizer to your entire body after a bath or shower to prevent early dryness. To further prevent this, don’t take too hot of baths or showers. Mildly warm water is best for skin — anything too hot will dry it out quickly, even if you’re moisturizing afterwards.
  2. Skin thins: As you age, skin becomes thinner and blood vessels are more noticeable. Your skin loses some of the fatty layer that lies under the epidermis (your outermost layer of skin) as you age. Thinning skin can cause easy bruising and breakage. It’s important to take appropriate care of thinning skin and use caution — a shallow cut could cause major bleeding. Sun exposure breaks down this fatty layer in skin quicker, so to prevent early thinning use sunscreen and cover up when exposed to the sun.
  3. Sagging occurs: Gravity takes hold after years of aging and drags us down — most noticeably in our skin. Skin will begin to sag and droop. This is also partially due to the thinning of the skin. Decreased amounts of fat, collagen and elastin causes skin to hang instead of being taut. The best way to prevent sagging is to start taking good care of your skin when you’re younger.
  4. Wrinkles begin to form: Everyone’s most feared sign of aging, wrinkles begin to develop around area of the skin that experience frequent movement. Thick and filling moisturizers will help prevent premature wrinkles, and later in life Botox and filler injections are also an option to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
